Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and ambulatory surgery centers are required by CMS memo QSO-17-30 to implement ASHRAE 188 WMPs. The Joint Commission actively surveys against WMP compliance. Hotels, universities, prisons, and buildings >10 stories are also covered under the standard.

What testing supports an ASHRAE 188 WMP?

Routine Legionella culture sampling at defined Points of Use (POUs) is the most common validation testing. Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC), free chlorine residual, and temperature monitoring round out a complete WMP validation package. AATLS provides all three under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

How often should we sample?

It documents a program team, system flow diagrams, control measures, monitoring thresholds, corrective actions, and documentation procedures. Who is required to have an ASHRAE 188 Water Management Plan?

What is the difference between a Water Management Plan and Legionella testing?
